The Venetian mask, in the centuries that followed the 13th century, slowly evolved from a decorative object into a cultural symbol, and even, in the middle of the 16th century, a magical land in which masks were used as a vehicle. Those who knew something about magic, which was unknown to the majority of the population, turned their spells to the masks, which had a wide variety of styles and were easy to use. These people were called Maskers. Over the course of time, as magic became more and more secretive, the Masked Men gradually settled into more obscure corners of the world. No one knew if they still existed, or where all the magic and danger had been hidden with them. The only thing that remains are the magnificent masks of the Venetian Carnival and the mask artists who make their living by painting masks.
